Emmerich Kálmán was born Kálmán Imre on October 24, 1882 in Siófok, Hungary, on the eastern shore of Lake Balaton. His father was a successful businessman, and both parents encouraged the development of their son’s musical talents, which were apparent at a very early age. His sister Vilma was both a violinist and a pianist. His son, Charles Emmerich Kálmán, is also a successful composer of musicals and completed the elder Kálmán's final work, Arizona Lady, in 1954. Kálmán's works are still occasionally performed at the end of the twentieth century in Germany and Austria and recordings exist of several of them, primarily dating from the early '70s.
